How does it work?

News feeds allow you to automatically collect news headlines from different websites so you don't need to visit the websites to read them. Although you 'subscribe' to a news feed, there is no information (eg email address) that you need to supply.

News feeds (sometimes referred to as RSS) are just specialised web pages, designed to be read by computers rather than people.

To collect news feeds, you simply need a Feed Reader (a good example is the Google Reader). To use the news feed from this website, you just point your feed reader at the RSS link shown above.
