Business Mentoring
South Devon Business Mentors has been established to help you develop yourself and your business. Operated by South West Innovation Centres, and funded by the Torbay Development Agency, this initiative offers support and advice to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the area.
The Mentors are experienced business people who have developed their own companies from scratch or have held senior management positions in industry. They are dedicated to supporting local business people and helping them to achieve their personal and professional objectives. They have undergone an interview and induction process to verify that they have the necessary credentials to be advising a client and receive a continuing programme of development in key business knowledge and diagnostic skills.
Amongst other things, a Mentor can:
- Offer a fresh perspective on business issues
- Discuss developments and measure improvements
- Act as a ‘sounding board’ for your ideas at a stage when it may be too early to afford employees.
- Gain credibility with other business agencies/funders
- Review basic business principles like research, business plans, cash flow, P&L, sales forecasts and reality checks
- Help businesses to help themselves

More about mentoring....

Virtually anyone can benefit from having a mentor. And most well-known, accomplished and successful people can identify people in their lives who acted as mentors.
Freddie Laker mentor to Richard Branson while setting up Virgin Airways advised Branson about British Airways' dirty tricks campaign, “"sue the bastards".
BA settled out of court when its lawyers found the lengths to which the company went to try to kill off Virgin.
BA had a legal bill of up to £3m, damages to Branson of £500,000 and a further £110,000 to his airline.
Branson divided his £500,000 among staff, each receiving £166.

second, find out how the cow got into the ditch;
and third, make sure you do whatever it takes so the cow doesn’t go in the ditch again.
